BABIES BOOGIE DOWN WITH PARENTS AT 2nd KIDDIE DISCO BALL

disco.jpgA metallic rotating disco ball, leisure suits, glitter and bubbles.  All part of a groovy disco dance party for parents and tots in Memphis . For the second year in a row, the Commission on Missing and Exploited Children (COMEC) invited families to "get their groove on" at its Kiddie Disco Ball.

The childproof dance party was held Saturday, August 2 at the Variety Club of Memphis. 150 kids and adults of all ages shared the dance floor to shake their booties to a mix of 70's and 80's tunes.

"It was the best play date!" said Katie Trungale of Germantown .

"What a great way to spend quality time with your kids," added Sarah Osborne of Olive Branch.

"The dance floor was never empty," remarked Marlana Farris of Southeast Memphis.

Thanks to Groovy DJ Vince "Cool Cat" Robinson of Powerstorm Productions who spun disco classics such as Funkytown, YMCA and the Electric Slide. Disco queen Michelle "Foxy Mama" Robinson served as emcee and auctioneer, but spent most of the time showing off her dance moves. 10 year old Brittany Russell performed songs from Hannah Montana before a crowd of adoring fans.

"We wanted to give families something special to do together," said organizer Selena Silvestro. "We saw dads spinning their little girls, moms dipping their sons and grandparents taking lots of pictures. What great memories."

Linda Robertson of Germantown insisted on spending her birthday with her son at the disco ball.

Melanie Allen of Lakeland had so much fun last year she came back this time with 20 guests. Allen admitted she and her kids practiced their dance moves before the party. It paid off. Allen and 9 year old daughter Taegan took home the best couple's dance honors. Her 4 year old son Cooper tied for first place with Blake McKinney for the narliest digs award. They both sported colorful leisure suits purchased at Goodwill.

Hannah Lovelace, Miss Junior Tipton County presented the winners with their awards. Gabby Wiernik of Collierville and Emma Schuler of Cordova received pink and purple boas after being named best dancers.

To help kids achieve the disco look, Sweet and Sassy of Bartlett provided free party style updos, tattoos, glitter stars, hair shots and more. Kids weren’t the only ones who wanted to be dolled up. Moms were also treated to glamorous makeovers.

And as DJ Robinson wrapped up the Saturday afternoon dance party with The Last Dance by Donna Summer, parents like Punam Shah of Collierville vowed to return next year.

"This could be the new dance craze. We can't wait to come back!"
