Local Congregations Are Called To Help In The Fight Against Breast Cancer |
|
The Memphis-MidSouth Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is organizing the area’s first Pink Sunday™.
Churches, synagogues and mosques are the center of family life for many Mid-Southerners. The Memphis-MidSouth Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is organizing the area's first Pink SundayTM. This grassroots effort is a partnership with local faith-based organizations to get the word out about breast health and breast cancer.
They're asking local congregations to make a commitment now to take part in Pink SundayTM on October 1 st. The color pink represents awareness for breast cancer, and is associated with helping women survive and conquer the disease. The deadline to reserve packets is Tuesday, September 12 th. Reservations will be taken on a first come first serve basis.
"Churches are where communities go for guidance both spiritual and other," explains LaShawn Hampton, Marketing Chair of the Board of Directors of the Memphis Chapter. "Congregations view spiritual leaders as authorities and take guidance from those leaders very seriously."
Pink Sunday® will be the official kick-off for Breast Health Month. Pink SundayTM is being funded by the Memphis-MidSouth Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Any faith-based organization in Shelby, Tipton, Fayette, and DeSoto counties may participate in this program. They will receive breast health information packets at no cost to them. The packet will contain educational materials including the popular "how-to" breast self exam shower card. Most of the literature will also be available in Spanish. The goal is to provide a minimum of 25,000 families with life-saving information.
"Information is power and if one life is saved through early detection, then we have done our job," says Pink SundayTM co-chair Andrea Zucker.
