Memphis mother compiled a list of marriage tips as a gift for her daughter's wedding, and now those tips are available as a book in local stores.
It took Lissa Noel one year to write, but 30 years to do the research. Noel of Midtown Memphis is the first time author of 100 "I Wills" After You Say "I Do." The little red and white book that fits in the palm of your hand is packed with100 helpful one-liners on marriage.
"Marriages don't come with instruction manuals," says Noel. "But we need instruction! Men buy books on how to improve a golf swing. Women buy books on how to become more organized. Why don't more of us look for resources to improve our marriages?"
Noel admits she's not a professional, but she does have three decades of experience. She's been married to her husband Randy for 30 years. They have two children Lauren and Randall. "I'm just a regular wife on a typical journey just like anyone else, but I have had a willingness to learn from others."
Noel learned from others by listening to tapes, seeking advice from friends, reading articles, keeping notes from sermons and attending seminars. She took notes, made file cards and saved them for years. The Memphis mom finally found a use for her stack of notes. When her daughter got married last summer, she compiled the thoughts and ideas into a book and presented it as wedding gift. Soon friends and family wanted copies.
"Hopefully this book will provide food for thought, encouragement to work on troubled areas, new ideas to make into individual goals or a creative way to get out of a rut," says Noel.
Noel's husband Randy agrees that committing to certain "I wills" in marriage leads to a happy, healthy and long lived love affair with your spouse.
"Generally speaking, men are more challenged when it comes to relationships," says Randy. "But the good news is these fundamental marriage enhancers can be learned. Just read, reflect and act."
"If you are willing to be challenged and enriched by making your marriage a priority, I suggest trying one ‘I Will' from this book and if you see a positive result, try another," adds the author. "Some will be harder to accomplish than others, but an attitude of giving it your best is often contagious."
The book is aimed at all audiences from newlyweds to couples who have been married for a long time. It's currently available in local gift shops and bookstores. You can also order copies from the author by email
