comec_parents.jpgWhen Tran Bui was a TV news reporter in memphis, she covered many heartbreaking stories about missing children. And she always turned to one local source for information -- the Commission on Missing and Exploited Children (COMEC), a nonprofit group that coordinates with the police department to issue the West Tennessee Amber Alerts.

Bui was impressed with the organization, which also provides counseling and resources to parents, that she joined its board of directors in 2003, becoming the board's president in 2006. But when Bui became a parent in 2005, COMEC's mission meant even more.

"Once I had a child, it changed everything," she says. "When you talk to people whose kids have been missing for weeks, months or even years, you look at your child and thing 'What would I do?'"

It's Bui's job to arm parents with information about child predators and child abuse and to get the word out about avoiding these dangers.
